Play and Say Day Event - The Avenue Playing Fields - 28 July 2010 - Please see Local Events page on our website
The Town Council owns and administers many areas of open space for the enjoyment of residents and visitors to Petersfield. Some areas are available to hire – see price list at the end of the page. If you wish to book please telephone the Town Council office on 01730 264182.
The Heath
One of the most popular areas, and considered the jewel in the crown by many, is The Heath. This area covers some 69 acres of land together with a 22 acre pond. The Heath is just a short walk from the Town Centre and is the site of the annual Taro Fair, which is held on 6 October every year (unless a Sunday). This was originally a horse fair but is now a large fun fair with many sideshows, which is enjoyed by many in the area every year.
Boats are available for hire during the summer and you can purchase light snacks, beverages and ice cream from the Heath Kiosk. You can also fish at the Pond – a water bailiff will ask you to buy a day ticket for fishing. The Pond also provides a home for many species of wildfowl.
If you wish to use your own boat on the Pond you need to purchase a boating licence. These are available for daily or annual use and are purchased from the Town Council.
The Heath is also an important archaeological site. 21 barrows can be found, forming the most important concentration of burial mounds in the South. They date from the Bronze Age and are all designated Ancient Monuments.
Play equipment is also provided by the Town Council and is much enjoyed by many children.
The Town Council is very grateful to the Friends of Petersfield Heath who take a very active interest in all that happens on the Heath. To find out more please following this link: www.foph.net
Allotments
Petersfield Town Council is responsible for 2 allotment sites, Sheet Allotments in Mill Lane, Sheet that has 100 plots and Tilmore Allotments, in Tilmore Road, Petersfield that has 69 plots. Both of these sites appear on a map of the area dated 1919 but allotments date back in this country to Circa 100BC.
The provision of allotments by local authorities is an important part of offering recreational facilities to parishioners. Allotments can provide many things to different people including an opportunity for flat dwellers to have a garden or people with gardens to extend their growing possibilities. They can also offer a way to experience good physical exercise out of doors, the growing of healthy fresh vegetables for the family to consume, social interaction, plant and knowledge sharing, as well as a peaceful oasis away from the hum drum of everyday life.
Latest Pricing Notes from Allotment Holder's Meeting
