We finally managed to make it to Downs House in April 2021 to present their 2020 plaque.  Masks, gloves and social distancing still applied!

Looking for #KIDSPIB2020?

We are thrilled to announce our joint winners of this year’s extraordinary competition as Downs House Care Home & Steep House Nursing Home.

Downs House Gardening Club’s first display to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the end of the war.  They decided on an army helmet to represent the troops putting their helmets down and the flowers represent the freedom and prosperity that followed.

Their second, unusual container – are two mannequin heads made into flower arrangements depicting the current global situation. These are flowers arranged in oasis.

Finally – another unusual container is a vintage BBQ which they turned into a beautiful flower pot. After some deliberation on whether to paint the BBQ or not they decided to keep the rusty worn look for authenticity.

Our PIB Committee at Petersfield Town Council were extremely impressed by the thought and effort that had gone into these floral displays.  We are delighted to recognise the achievement of Downs House Gardening Club.

Steep House Nursing Home’s entries were submitted with the following statement;

Our residents at Steep House have always loved doing gardening. This time our home was also affected by corona-virus, but we came out of it and the one thing which promoted our residents both mentally and physically was helping out in the garden to enter into Petersfield Bloom Competition. One of our residents added “The lock-down is the perfect opportunity to get into gardening with maintaining social distancing.” Throughout the restricted visiting and when the usual activities have had to be adapted, the new and improved outdoor area has allowed the residents to get involved with planting and gardening to enter the new project of Petersfield in Bloom Competition.  The whole credit of this goes to our Maintenance Man, Mr Martyn Ball.

These words are truly music to our ears.  So many people have taken this opportunity to reconnect with nature and enjoy their gardens like never before.  We are thrilled to learn how much the residents at Steep House have engaged with a project in which their abilities can truly shine!

After careful consideration we have taken the decision to cancel this year’s annual bloom competition in the format we are used to.  The health and safety of our community, volunteers and judges must be our priority.

We hope however, that you might consider taking part in our extraordinary online competition of the special ‘lock-down‘ variety,  which we hope will inspire people to get creative during this period of isolation.

To enter you must either be a resident or a business within the parish of Petersfield.

There are just 3 categories which are as follows:

  1. MULTI this is an area of display, and can be anything from a flower border to a vegetable patch.
  2. SOLO this is a singular display, one hanging basket an individual arrangement or an unusual container.
  3. VE/VJ we would still very much like to include this year’s special category of anything around the theme of VE and/or VJ day as we commemorate the 75 year anniversary.

The closing date for our extraordinary competition will still be July 1 2020.
